Thursday, November 21, 2024*This is a collaborative post.
Detroit is a spot that’s been on my bucket list for a while. There’s a ton of rich history to explore, and over the past year, when they repurposed the old train depot, it really put Detroit back on the map for folks. Often referred to as Motor City, Detroit is a dynamic destination with a rich cultural tapestry, world-class attractions, and an ever-growing culinary scene. Whether you're a history buff, a music lover, or a foodie, Detroit offers something for everyone. Planning an exciting week here involves a mix of iconic landmarks, unique neighborhoods, and hidden gems. Here’s a guide to making the most of your visit.Day 1: Dive into Detroit’s meaningful history
Start your week by exploring Detroit’s deep-rooted history at the Detroit Historical Museum. From the city’s automotive legacy to its role in the Underground Railroad, the exhibits provide a fascinating introduction.
Next, head to the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in nearby Dearborn. This expansive museum showcases innovations that shaped America, including classic cars, historic planes, and even the bus where Rosa Parks made her stand (or her seat).
Day 2: Celebrate a rich automotive heritage
No trip to Detroit is complete without a visit to the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), which boasts one of the most significant art collections in the country. Be sure to see Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry Murals, a tribute to the city’s workers and its role in the industrial revolution.
In the afternoon, visit the Ford Rouge Factory Tour, where you can witness the car-making process in action. It's a must-see for automotive enthusiasts and gives insight into why Detroit is called the Motor City.

Day 3: Explore a hopping music scene
Detroit’s contribution to music, particularly Motown, is legendary. Spend a day at the Motown Museum, where you’ll walk through Studio A, the birthplace of hits from artists like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Diana Ross. After soaking in Motown history, head to one of the city’s many live music venues, such as The Fillmore Detroit or Magic Stick, to catch a local performance or touring band.
Day 4: Discover unique, cultural neighborhoods
Spend a day exploring Detroit’s eclectic neighborhoods. Start in Corktown, the city’s oldest neighborhood, known for its vibrant murals and the famed Michigan Central Station. Grab lunch at the iconic Slows Bar BQ before heading to Midtown Detroit, home to trendy boutiques and the Detroit Historical Society. Later, make your way to Greektown, where you’ll find fantastic dining and entertainment options. Try a traditional Greek meal or test your luck at the Greektown Casino-Hotel.
Day 5: Indulge in the tasty food scene
Detroit’s food scene is diverse and innovative. Start your culinary journey at the Eastern Market, one of the largest public markets in the U.S. Enjoy fresh produce, artisanal goods, and local delicacies. For dinner, try the city’s famous Detroit-style pizza at Buddy’s Pizza or Loui’s Pizza.
Days 6-7: Enjoy nature and relaxation
Spend your weekend enjoying Detroit’s green spaces. Visit Belle Isle Park, an island park with beautiful gardens, the Belle Isle Aquarium, and the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory. Another great spot is Palmer Park, perfect for hiking or picnicking.
For those planning a longer trip, finding the right accommodations is key. Many opt for an extended stay Detroit Mi, offering the comfort and flexibility of a home base while allowing you to explore the city at your own pace.
With this itinerary, your week in Detroit is sure to be memorable. The Motor City’s blend of history, culture, and innovation guarantees an exciting and fulfilling experience.
