POPSUGAR Reading Challenge Prompt: A book by two authors.
Brief synopsis: Nellie is a young teacher with her entire life ahead of her and an amazing fiancé who is there to sweep her off her feet. Vanessa is a divorcee who once had a wondrous life with a wondrous man. As each story is told, the reader learns that not everything is as it appears. The number one request of the book's description? Make no assumptions.
I'll be honest - if you haven't heard of this one yet, I'd be really surprised. Since The Wife Between Us came out in January, I've truly heard nothing except rave reviews. So much so that it began to get passed among some colleagues at work, which is how I ended up with it.
I think the hype kind of ruined it for me.
I went into reading this twisty psychological thriller with the highest of high expectations. And when I say "twisty psychological thriller," I really mean it. The entire book is chockfull of twists and turns. I mean, every time you think you've got something figured out - whoop - another turn. The first one I kind of figured out, but while I didn't necessarily figured out the other twists, they didn't really shock me. Maybe I was just expecting something more... over-the-top.
That's not to say it wasn't over-the-top. Can I just say how much bad stuff can really happen to one person? It was a bit unbelievable. There's also this eerily odd relationship within the novel that was never fully explained. In fact, there were so many separate storylines within the novel (though only between a handful of characters) that it was nearly impossible to keep up with all of them, much less actually have a wrap-up or explanation of all of those storylines. Too many things were left unanswered, and some things I ended up being more confused about than I was in the beginning (see: eerily odd relationship mentioned above).
I really didn't hate this book - I just had a lot of unanswered questions. And let's be honest, people absolutely love this book, so there's a high chance you will, too - and you'll have a chance coming up next month to get your own copy because I'll be offering a giveaway of The Wife Between Us and some extra goodies, as well.
Let me know, have you read this one yet?

I'm so curious about the "odd relationship within the novel that was never fully explained." I didn't catch this! Like you, I liked the book but didn't feel like it lived up to the hype. It was simultaneously over-the-top & not over-the-top enough, & it just felt... weird to me. I did love that first big twist, but the rest felt... I don't know. They didn't do it for me.
ReplyDeleteI'll DM you on Instagram about the odd relationship. Everyone loved that first big twist, but I had kind of figured it out already, which sucked. :( I wanted to love this book, but it was really overhyped in my opinion.
